The Charlton Public Library is a proud partner of the Dementia Friendly Charlton Initiative.

Dementia Friendly Charlton is striving to involve all sectors of the community in order to create an environment where individuals with dementia, as well as their friends, families and care-partners can live as independently as possible and continue to be a vibrant part of the town of Charlton.

A Dementia Friendly Community is a community of informed and respectful individuals who can identify and assist residents or visitors who exhibit or have symptoms of dementia, their families and caregivers. These communities address the needs of their specific residents, advocate for awareness, ensure their safety, and provide services, education and programs that support people with dementia We encourage all sectors of Charlton to be a part of the initiative. To date, more than 150 towns and cities across the Commonwealth are moving forward to make their communites a more welcoming place for people living with dementia as well as their loved ones and care partner.

Goals:

To educate the Charlton community, thereby increasing awareness and understanding of dementia-type diseases.

To reduce isolation by offering memory cafés, support groups and other opportunities for social engagement.

To encourage and provide training for businesses and merchants interested in offering dementia-specific support for customers living with dementia.

To build a network of Dementia Friends; individuals who understand the disease progression and are trained in relaxing effectively with those living with changes in thinking and memory

How to Help:

You can start by becoming a Dementia Friend! Dementia Friends are individuals committed to being mindful and respectful toward people with dementia. By participating in a one-hour information session facilitated by a Dementia Friends Champion, Dementia Friends learn about common behaviors exhibited by people with dementia and practical actions to support adults with memory impairment in their community.
